Been there before with good results, but had the Cuban sandwich today. Fantastic sandwich. Perfect size for lunch. Was very surprised to get such a good cuban in Cleveland. Can be a little pricey, but for the effort they put into the food it's very much so worth it.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate it very much. I remember serving you today and I wanted to personally say thanks. BTW, I don't know if you are aware but our place is 100% gluten-free and therefore can be pricy as a result. That being said, I was so happy to read that you felt it was a great sandwich and a great interpretation of a Cubano. Cheers!! Chef Brian

My first time visiting Cafe Avalaun was about 10 minutes ago but I couldn’t wait to write this review. I have a lot of dietary restrictions and it makes me happy to the point of tears that I could walk into a place and not worry about being unable to find anything I could eat OR worry about getting sick after because of cross contamination. Everyone was very nice and the food was absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back as often as possible.

Immensely disappointing. Popped in for a late breakfast on my way to the airport after reading such great reviews. I ordered the Canadian Crepe. Took forever to get it, there was just one young kid/guy working both the counter and the kitchen. Older guy came in few minutes later to help with the orders. Big draw to what i ordered were the cheese curds. As you can see in the photo, they were no where to be found. At that point, i had waited long enough and couldn't bother to send it to be fixed. Flavor was lacking. Honestly, i get better crepes at my local food truck back home, just didn't get what the hype is about. Maybe no other place that serves crepes in the area?

Thank you for taking the time to review us. I wish I could have spoken to you personally. What can I say.... you caught us on a bad day. Short staffed and catering. I left my son for 10 minutes to run to the store and unfortunately you had a bad experience. When I got back (the older guy) I was shocked at how busy we were. That is an unusual time for us.

I have celiac disease and i have lived with it for 2 years now. If you miss eating out like a normal person, this is the place to go!! The ENTIRE place is gluten free and they have a very clean food prep station. You do not have to worry about cross contamination at all! The fries were just like real fast-food fries and their sandwiches were delicious! They also have a wide variety of teas to choose from like peach, mint, etc. I highly reccommend this café to any fellow gluten free friends :)

Nice options for specialty diets. Food was good. Prepare to pay it is not inexpensive. Baked goods are fantastic. Coffee is inexcusably terrible. It took literally 30 mins to get a latte. Customers were actually asking for money back for coffees they never received after they ate. When I received my latte the milk was horribly overstretched it looked like they made it with a bubble machine. Our Bill for 3 people was around 70$ that included 4 baked goods to take home. That is not a cheap breakfast. For that much I have high expectations for my coffee. This was not the first time we have received terrible coffee. Cool place, nice we have it, hope it grows, staff needs training to expedite food/drink and improve quality. Especially the cafe portion. I am giving 4 stars because I think they were trying and believe in this place being GREAT.

I ordered the Breakfast Sammy, and I am already in love. Buttermilk biscuit was soft, fluffy, and delicious. Egg was perfectly scrambled, and the bacon crisp and hot. Dedicated gluten free menu makes it easy to order if you have gluten sensitivity. Atmosphere is warm and cozy, with a chalk board to write a note, or let your kid draw. Cant wait to go back and try other menu items.

John, My apologies. There was in fact a mix up and I take full responsibility. I just heard your voice mail. Here's what happened. Someone else accidentally gave your fruit cake muffins to a customer that ordered panettone muffins. and vice versa. It is basically a case of juggling so many orders some how. I know it is frustrating. I would also be upset if I was in your position. I can deliver the correct muffins to you tomorrow morning.

First and foremost the restaurant automatically gets 3 stars, because my wife with food allergies can eat almost anything there. The 20 minute normal activity at other restaurants going back and forth to the kitchen to find out what she can eat is gone. The coffee is amazing, especially the Mexican jumping bean. Expensive, but definitely great. As far as the rest of the food goes, I just haven’t found anything I love. I seem to find the food kind of bland and without much seasoning. The Frenchie Fru Fru is probably the most flavorful, but still don’t love it. I’ll keep trying things to see if I find one I can call “delicious”. If there ends up being some things I really like at some point, then I’ll change it to 5 stars.

I went in there this morning and the young man waiting on me and that made my latte was SO GREAT! I wish I would have gotten his name, but he was so sweet and gave me ALL the compliments lol! I loved it. I felt so good when I left out of there. I told him that I would definitely be coming back just because of him. But to be honest the staff that I’ve met are great! No words can express how much I love this place, the people who work there, and the delicious goods they bake and serve! I have a plethora of food allergies and sensitivities - some I’ve had since I was baby, others developed over time and all have grown in severity over time, too. :/ I have an insane sweet tooth. If I could have a cookie or a donut a day, I’d be content. And for a good long time, I was able to do just that...until I became intolerant to gluten and officially allergic to dairy products. Most goods sold in stores are either gluten-free or dairy-free; rarely are they both. For about a year, if I wanted a sweet treat, I’d have to make it at home. (Severe first-world problem, I know, but sometimes you just want something NOW!) Enough of my backstory! Cut to about a year ago, my mother shared a snippet from The Plain Dealer plugging this amazing 100% gluten-free bakery - and it’s only 5 minutes away from my house! From the first time I walked in, I was hooked. The baked goods are amazing (the seasonal specialities are life-changing...the pumpkin roll?! A gluten AND dairy-free apple pie?! AND A PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE MADE WITH ACTUAL PUMPKIN?!!!!!); I never leave without at least two chocolate chip cookies and/or a paleo almond brownie. I order donuts on the regular (6 all for meee :), and the CINNAMON ROLLS ARE HEAVEN-SENT, my gosh. My family members and some friends are not sensitive to gluten and they love the food as well! I’ve sent care packages to friends out of town who have celiac disease and/or dairy allergies who don’t have any access to bakery goods that they love. Thanks to Cafè Avalaun, we all can enjoy delicious food without the pain that comes from our allergies. Even my gluten-free kitten loves the yummy treats! Last compliment: the anniversary gluten-free CARNIVAL...OH. MY. GOODNESS. The garlic aioli?! THE FUNNEL CAKE!!!! The DONUTS! I wish it wasn’t only once a year! To anyone who didn’t read this - or if you did and you need another nudge, this is it: just go. You will not be disappointed, whether you’re gluten-intolerant, sensitive to dairy, or a foodie who can eat whatever they want whenever they want. Give this bakery a try. Ooh, one more point: sometimes you’ll run into the cutest dogs in the store! That right there would be enough for me to check it out, at least once. :)

My family and I absolutely love Cafe Avalaun and have made it a tradition to visit weekly. We have a family member with a nut allergy and another with celiac disease, so it is rare to feel as safe and well cared for as we do there when dining out. The food is delicious (the adults especially enjoy the giddy up crepe and the kids love the waffles). And the Mexican drinking chocolate is fantastic with a perfect spice ratio-better than we’ve tasted even compared to places in other cities like Chicago. The staff is friendly and always accommodating, and we always look forward to seeing them. We can’t recommend Cafe Avalaun highly enough!

This is a favorite for weekday lunches! It can get a bit crowded so we usually try to get there a bit before noon. We came for the gluten free.... But it's also a big hit with the wheat eaters at work. Do yourself a favor and order the "fancy toast". It's always changing and even though the combinations sometimes sound a little questionable I haven't had one that wasn't out of this world!

Cafe Avalaun replied:
Thanks for taking time to review us on google. Yes, many times the food can take a while. There are variety of reasons even a simple item might take longer than you’d expect. We make everything from scratch and try to maintain a fresh supply of all menu items. Sometimes that can equal a delay in order to prepare to fulfill an order. We hate to say no to a customer and so the protocol is “if we have the ingredients then we say yes as much as possible” since we are a restaurant that caters to special dietary needs some orders are more complex and take a good amount of focus. That being said, we try to accommodate everyone’s needs and provide an opportunity for all to enjoy food with out fear of sensitivity/allergic reactions. The best way to ensure little to no wait is pre-ordering online. You can even leave a note on your order if you plan to dine in, but are tight on time. Or when you arrive most orders are ready to go. No lines no waiting. https://squareup.com/market/cafe-avalaun

Food is always very expensive, but as a Celiac who doesn’t eat out due to safety concerns, it’s so nice to be able to walk in and not worry about cross-contamination. Food itself is creative but not always executed perfectly. Crepes have dairy free coconut options, which is nice. Still go here fairly often!

I got the Hash It Out crepe, and my only regret is that I couldn't order everything on the menu at once! Unique gluten-free food is a super rare find, and boy am I getting sick of lettuce-wrapped burgers... So I am thrilled this place exists! Plenty of interesting vegan choices as well. Visiting the area from Chicago, we went out of our way to stop here and it was well worth it! I enjoyed a delicious turkey club panini. My daughter had the Za crepe. We both have celiac disease and rarely areable to eat real food while traveling. We also split a lemon bar crepe. So delicious! Highly recommended!!

Overpriced. Very long wait for one sandwich. Good food. Do not come here for a quick pick up. I’ve been waiting for 33 minutes so long- still haven’t gotten food. Update: got it after 40 minutes. It’s one sandwich. The staff/vibe is a I don’t wanna be here-it’s so slow today- kind of vibe. I ordered with no one else in line. They’ve delivered food to one table in 30 minutes. I’m on lunch break 😅 I can’t be gone for this long waiting- not even eating. It’s 10.50 for my sandwich about the size of my hand. I was told it was “big.” For reference: a chipotle bowl is 6.85 for about 3 times as much food. The sandwich was delicious, but the cons outweigh the pros by far. Go to Munch-7 minutes away that is more food, better price, vegan options. Awesome environment and staff. Wayyyy Over priced. Long wait. Good food. Not goin again.

Cafe Avalaun offers delicious food that anyone can enjoy whether or not they are avoiding gluten. Their menu is also very sensitive to other food needs with options that are paleo, nut free, AIP, vegan, etc. I LOVE their biegnets when they are available. It is incredible how they use such high quality local ingredients and go the extra mile. They even make their own scrapple! Who does that? My favorite drinks are either the lavender lemonade, the Bulletproof coffee or the Mexican Jumping Bean. The crepes are truly amazing with so many creative fillings. Great spot for breakast, lunch or brunch. Did you know that they cater and also have a wonderful service called Fresh Meals? I wish that I lived closer.

The atmosphere in the building was okay. It's intriguing enough to make you want to come in. The food is that involves meat you should probably stay away from. I gave the Chicken crepes a try, thinking that you really can't mess up chicken. Its a safe bet. Wrong! It was a little dry. Dry like 3 day old leftover turkey after Thanksgiving. The rest of the food had no seasoning or flavor. All I could taste was the kale. The only thing that saved them from me asking for my money back was the pastries. I had a strawberry muffin that had no gluten and dairy. So I may come back for that. The coffee is hit or miss. The coffee was burnt. I believe truly that they charge based on the fact that their aren't many vegan restaurants around and not on quality. It was smart to have me pay before I got my meal, because you get the option to tip. And I didn't have cash, so they got tipped for poor quality food. My whole meal was almost $40 and I left hungrier then when I came. The portions are small and bland. But you live and you learn. Why did I go to a vegan restaurant expecting to have good chicken? That's the equivalent to going to a steakhouse and expecting excellent swordfish.

I did the Chinese takeout night, which was my 3rd or 4th time there. Egg roll...the inside tasted great but the wrapper was more like bread. That was a disappointment. 3 stars. Sesame chicken. Fab. 5 stars. Veggie fried rice. Fab. 5 stars. I just wish there was a way to not have the nightshades...a lot of Celicac's react to them. Service was friendly but sloooooow. It's an hour round trip to come here for me. Standing in line for another 30 min for a takeout order I placed and paid for 2 days ago was not a win for me. :( I had hoped the bottleneck had improved but it seems not. So...expect to wait a while for food.

I am a regular here. Great, celiac safe food. You will be able to relax knowing you will not leave sick! My favorites include the cinnamin buns, the Philly Cheesecrepe, Croque Madame, the chicken and waffles, and Lemon dessert crepe. Their cookies are a good texture, too. The Mexican Drinking Chocolate is adicting. It is a dark chocolate hot chocolate with cayenne peppers. The unexpected combination is surprisingly delicious! There are a lot of allergy friendly options beyond just gluten free. My kids like the Fast Sammy, a healthier version of an Egg McMuffin on a buttery, gluten free biscuit. Order it with the hash brown potatoes for more of a meal. Once or twice a month, they stay late on a Friday for a pop up dinner. The Paleo one was absolutely amazing! The food was flavorful and did not taste gf, let alone paleo! The restaurant has a decidedly Cleveland Heights vibe. It is not usually a quick in and out, unless you order to go. The food is all made fresh to order and fresh takes time. It is healthy, and while not cheap, when you consider the cost of the higher quality ingredients, it seems reasonable for what it is. This restaurant is worth a try, even if you are not gluten free!

Best gluten free food in metro-Cleveland, and they only cook with certified GF ingredients, so you never have to worry about naturally GF foods passing through contaminated processing facilities, or on-site contamination. Due to their in-house GF certification, and measures to prevent cross-contamination between various non-gluten allergens they sometimes use, absolutely no outside food is permitted on premises.

I enjoy the food and the staff, but the manager/owner needs to never wait on a customer. He severely lacks people skills and caused me to give a 3 star review instead of a 5 star review which they truly could have earned without him. The first couple of times he said anything to me I just dismissed his shortness. But this last time he was the only person there, I asked him about a muffin I had seen and is comment to me came off as a reprimand instead of a sorry I missed it. But his staff are amazing and friendly and understand that customers don't come in to feel the stress of his business and that is how he makes you feel.

My wife is a newly diagnosed celiac and I'm the reluctant husband. She ordered a gluten free Cassata cake from Cafe Avalaun for her daughter's wedding. I had limited expectations... after all, how good could a gluten free Cassata cake really be (or anything gluten free for that matter)? I was going to pass when it was time. When we picked up the cake it was impeccably made just as ordered and the owner was very helpful in making sure it was securely packaged for the 40 min trip. Fast forward to the wedding reception: when the guests started eating the cake - most not knowing it was gluten free - and raving about how good it was I gave in and had a small piece. Much to my surprise it tasted amazing! The cake was moist and maybe a little denser than expected but the taste and texture was excellent. The icing was smooth and light with the perfect balance of sweetness that complimented the cake very well. I had a second piece, a little bigger this time. Cafe Avalaun and the owner, Brian Doyle have officially changed my outlook on making the switch to a gluten free. At my wife's suggestion I'm ready to try their gluten free, home delivered, Fresh Meals. As the saying goes here in Cleveland, "I'm All In"!

Great food, service was lacking. Walked in for the first time at 10:30am on Sunday morning, no greeting, no indication of where to begin. Looked at three employees standing there for some sort of cue as to whether the menu was the sprawling thing on the wall or the paper ones by the cash register. They just looked at me blankly. I picked up two paper menus for me and my friend, looked em over and picked something out. When I went back to order, they then told me that the paper menu was only their special order meal service... Ok. Let me go back to the wall and pick again. Food was great, selection incredible, paleo and AIP even. Super well labeled, every dietary restriction taken care of. Portions were small but that's fine, was excellent food, happy to pay for quality. Also had their paleo carrot cake muffin thing - They charged me the wrong price, about a dollar more than what was marked. I only noticed this on the way out and didn't want to fuss with it. No refills on the tea... Overall a bit annoying but hope to upgrade this to a 5 star review in the future. Incredibly unique menu and food, glad to have tried this place and will be back.

Drew, let us start off by saying we are so happy you enjoyed the food. We are sorry to hear that you had issues with the service. As is common in the restaurant industry, those positions go through a fair bit of turnover, and we are in the process of getting our new staff up to speed on procedures and doing things to our standard. I am glad you are willing to give us another try and would love to buy you some tea on us next time. Thank you so much for the thoughtful feedback. Chef Brian

Amazing food, amazing service, amazing concept. The only problem? We're not from Cleveland so we can't come here everyday! We found Cafe Avaluan visiting family in Cleveland and can't recommend it enough! They have such an amazing grasp of the difference between gluten free, vegan, paleo, and primal (something that many people do not) and offer options to fit everyone! Whether you have special dietary needs or not, the food is delicious and the team is great. Highly recommended! Thanks again for having us!

Dropped in for 2 coffees and a breakfast sandwich to go... one coffee came out after 10 minutes, the other coffee arrived a full 40 minutes later. Ridiculous. Complained to a man who appeared to be the 'manager' (if there even is one in this place!) and he didn't seem to care. Then the breakfast sandwich arrived and it was disgusting , I threw it away.

Sarah, I am sorry you had a less than satisfactory experience. As a small business, particularly in the restaurant industry, we often find ourselves having to train, and get new employees up to speed. The food is good, but heaven forbid you might be in a hurry or be on a schedule. I ordered take out for a few people in my office and it was a full 20 minutes late. While I just looove waiting around wasting my time it also meant the food that was ready first was way cold by the time we could actually eat. I have never been to this place when there was more than one person in the kitchen. ONE at 12:30pm. You know, like for lunch! I felt so bad for her. She was rushing around like crazy and was very nice, but geez get her some help if you want people to come in on their lunch breaks!

Place looked promising at first. Food is average at best. I had the French Fru Fru Crepe which left much to be desired. Service is slow. I truly believe the high ratings are reflexive from the customers who are gluten sensitive/intolerant/avoidant and don't have many options here in Cleveland.

The crepe we had was awesome. The service, not so much. They were more interested in talking with their friends than actively maintaining their coffee station. Free coffee refills is only appealing if they actually have coffee made. Took about a half an hour AFTER ASKING just to get a refill... And I felt like I was inconveniencing them by asking.

I'm only aware of a handful of restaurants on Cleveland's East Side that attempt to cater to those of us with food sensitivities and healthy eating strategies such as vegan or paleo. This little bakery/creperie/breakfast spot has the gluten free thing totally handled. And they do a very good job with dairy free and soy free, too. My biggest suggestion is to introduce some raw sweeteners into the baked goods in place of cane sugar. Honey, agave nectar or maple syrup for example. The gluten-free snickerdoodles looked wonderful, but they, like all the other sweet treats, contained cane sugar. My crepe was delicious although I'd have been happy with a bit larger serving. We're going back on Friday evening, which is the only day they're open for dinner. They have a different menu each week, and reservations are strongly suggested.

Have been there twice. First time was excellent. We all (me, mom, cousin) enjoyed the food. The second time was the complete opposite. I ordered a bacon and spinach omelet to go for lunch. When I get back to the office it was burnt. And I mean to a CRISP. I don't want to believe someone served me that on purpose, however they had to have seen that it was Blackened and packed it anyway and charged me anyway. My feelings and wallet were so hurt. I didn't have time to go back. I just went without lunch and have not been back since. I hope it was just a fluke, but it makes me wary of recommending.

This place was too pricey for what you receive. You serve yourself water, you order your own food, and you don't have a waiter/waitress. However, the prices are similar to a normal sit down restaurant. They need to reduce their prices or provide service worthy of the $35 bucks that I spent on two people. Additionally, the food was just ok, definitely not worth the price I paid. The chicken was dry and the crepe was undercooked. I won't be returning and neither will the person I was with.

As a gluten-eater I can honestly say everything I've had in the restaurant and at home through their fresh meals program has been fantastic. This is a restaurant for everybody, not just for those looking for GF. As the husband of a celiac I can't say enough about what this restaurant means to me. Aside from the food being great, it's so nice to eat out with the family at a place where the kids can share bites of anything with their mommy because it's all safe. I would not only highly recommend their restaurant, but check out their fresh meals program. Chef-prepared meals that you can choose what to order and pick up once a week. They are both delicious and a huge time saver. The food is all fresh, locally sourced, and raised the right way.

Food was ok. Love the gf options but was disappointed with the lack of welcome or service. Had never been there before and sat at a dirty table for 15 min. No one greeted us in that whole time or directed us how to order (I guess they don't actually serve your table). You pay upon order and are directed to leave a tip when they don't even provide service. No drink refills, no checking on you, and you have to clean up your own dishes and table when you're done. It's no wonder the one we sat at was dirty. I was expecting a lot more than I got. Disappointed for sure.

Overpriced for low quality, bland food; terrible service & no A.C. Although we made reservations for "Burger Night", after standing in the middle of the place for 10 minutes, we were given a table directly in front of the bathroom and right next to the bussing station & open kitchen door. No silverware or napkins provided & dirty wet table. Hamburgers arrived without the fries or orings. One hamburger was overcooked & dry & the other was undercooked. One was missing the bacon, other missing the cheese. Waitress never checked on us to see if food was ok. When fries & orings finally arrived, orings had maybe 8 in order & looked like they were left on bottom of someone elses unfinished order. Fries had black marks on them from using old potatoes. Milkshakes had consistency of water & had big chunks of ice in them. Food very bland made w/low quality ingredients. I was nearly ran into several times by lady bussing tables & people using the bathroom. The owner did issue us a full refund but we will not be returning. This review is based solely on what I experienced at Cafe Avalaun, your experience may be different.

I have been coming here since they opened. It has helped me immensely because I usually get glutened if I eat in regular restaurants, even when I order off the gf menu. My favorite item on the menu is the philly cheesecrepe. Their new and improved chocolate chip cookies have a good texture. The pink frosted donuts are also good. They make a roasted banana muffin that is also tasty. Sometimes they offer a special of chicken and waffles that tastes like it is not even gf! The restaurant has a Cleveland Heights vibe. I like the cute way they display their menu on a chalkboard wall. It is the kind of atmosphere that feels laid back and comfortable. Though small, I have never had to wait for a table; however, depending on the time of day and how many people are working, getting food can sometimes be slow. I think they have been hiring more people, so that seems to be getting better. One of my favorite aspects of the restaurant is that they have Friday night dinner specials. I have gotten to eat Chinese and Italian food again and they were both delicious! While the food is not cheap, you get what you pay for! The ingredients are of the highest quality and the preparation is consistent. If you are celiac or gluten intolerant, this is must see restaurant. But if you just enjoy a great local place with charm and terrific food, then check it out! My family who can eat gluten love to eat there and I have brought tons of friends there and each person has said they would run back! We are so lucky to have this gem so close to home!

This place really knows how to cook gluten-free food! My husband and I enjoyed our valentine's day dinner special they had going on. We've also been there a number of times for lunch. My husband doesn't eat gluten-free regularly but loves everything he's eaten there. It's a great place to check out!

This place is a dream come true! The food is wonderful and creative, the service is excellent, and my daughter with celiac disease can eat here with 100% confidence and no worries about contamination. I love that the ingredients are locally sourced whenever possible. I love that it is family-owned and run as well. I had a savory crepe with goat cheese, beets, and greens. I would never have guessed that it was gluten free. My daughter had a sweet crepe and the smile on her face was priceless. We took some donuts to go for my husband and son, who devoured them in seconds. We will be back!

I'm IN LOVE!!! I am GF and I was so excited to go to Cafe Avalaun after reading their wonderful write up in the paper. It did not disappoint! I have been a few times in the last 2 weeks and have enjoyed it! The owners are very nice and love what they do. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Philly Cheesecrepe, the Fast Sammy with the biscuit, and the Lemon Bar - total YUM. Maggie - the pastery chef is so sweet (no pun intended) and has created some delicious desserts. I have had and loved the Praline donut, the lemon curd powdered donut, the lemon polenta cake, the walnut maple bar and the madelines. I did not think I could eat a delicious dessert again until now... THANK YOU ALL!!! Note: I wish the hours were a little later on Friday, Saturday - maybe until 4:30/5pm would be wonderful! Or if they had "bakery hours" for example only crepes, and what is in the bakery case - but nothing made from the kitchen after 3pm, which would free up the chef/owners if they have other committments.

It is now the end of January 2017, I would like to leave an updated review, but can't figure out how! I am still in love with Cafe Avalaun and now have experienced the Fresh Meals Club. Still 5 stars plus in my world. Also, my reality in eating a more noteworthy assortment of nourishment has opened up immensely. Food that I have tried before and didn't like, I now love! I now have the courage to try foods absolutely new to my palete, and am delighted!....(well maybe I just got inspired to figure out how!)

Delicious crepes and salads, fabulous GF bakery and super coffees and other beverages. Plenty of organic and locally and ethically sourced eats, and something for any diet. My 10 year old son took one bite of his "Clevelander" (peirogi style) crepe, filled with mashed potatoes, caramelized onion, and cheddar and drizzled with creme fraiche, and said, "I love it. I LITERALLY love it!" Also, the place is homey and welcoming and the staff is really friendly. Two thumbs up from me and son!
